About Sigma Nu
The Epsilon Zeta Chapter at the University of Florida

The Founding of Sigma Nu
Sigma Nu Fraternity was founded in 1869 at Virginia Military Institute in Lexington, Virginia. The fraternity was founded by James Frank Hopkins, Greenfield Quarles, and James McIlvaine Riley shortly after the American Civil War, in direct opposition to hazing at VMI.
Sigma Nu's existence is based on the principle of Honor, rejecting hazing as a form of initiation. The founders sought to create a fraternal organization that would foster the development of ethical leaders, a principle that continues to guide the fraternity today.
